Navgraha Pooja is the most comprehensive Vedic ritual for planetary harmony. Performed correctly, it creates powerful positive shifts across health, career, relationships, and mental peace.
In Vedic philosophy, the nine planets — Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon), Mangal (Mars), Budh (Mercury), Guru (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), Rahu, and Ketu — are not merely celestial bodies. They are cosmic forces that influence every aspect of human life. Navgraha Pooja is the sacred ritual of honouring all nine, seeking their blessings and pacifying their challenging influences.
What is Navgraha Pooja?
Navgraha Pooja (also called Navagraha Shanti or Graha Shanti Pooja) is a Vedic ritual in which all nine planets are worshipped through specific mantras, offerings, and a havan (sacred fire). Each planet has its own associated colour, grain, flower, gemstone, deity, and mantra. A proper Navgraha Pooja honours each planet according to its specific requirements.
When Should You Perform Navgraha Pooja?
Navgraha Pooja is recommended in the following situations:
- ·Before a major life event — marriage, childbirth, starting a business, buying property, or relocating
- ·During challenging planetary periods (Mahadasha or Antardasha) of malefic planets
- ·During Sade Sati or Shani Dhaiya (when Saturn transits over or next to your Moon sign)
- ·When Rahu-Ketu transit your Moon sign or Ascendant (every 18 months)
- ·During prolonged periods of illness, financial stress, or family discord
- ·As an annual ritual (Varshabda Shanti) on your solar return
- ·When recommended by your astrologer after a chart reading

What Happens During a Navgraha Pooja?
A complete Navgraha Pooja performed in the Mithila Vedic tradition includes the following:
- 1.Sankalpa — The ritual intention is set by the Pandit, stating the purpose and the beneficiary's name, birth star, and gotra
- 2.Kalash Sthapana — Consecration of a copper pot (kalash) representing the totality of cosmic energy
- 3.Navgraha Mandal — Arrangement of nine specific grains and materials for each planet in a specific geometric pattern
- 4.Pooja of each Graha — Individual mantras, offerings, and invocations for all nine planets
- 5.Havan (sacred fire ritual) — Specific ahutis (offerings) into the fire for each planet — sesame for Saturn, barley for Jupiter, rice for the Moon, etc.
- 6.Aarti and Prasad — Closing prayers and distribution of consecrated food
Benefits of Navgraha Pooja
- ·Reduces the intensity of challenging planetary periods and transits
- ·Creates an atmosphere of mental peace and clarity
- ·Supports health, especially when planets ruling health houses are afflicted
- ·Removes obstacles in career, business, and relationships
- ·Strengthens protective planetary influences in the chart
- ·Supports the success of important ventures begun after the pooja
- ·Particularly beneficial for children with afflicted birth charts
The Importance of Correct Procedure
A Navgraha Pooja is only as effective as the knowledge and sincerity of the Pandit performing it. In the Maithil tradition, this ritual follows the Paraskar Grihyasutra — a very ancient and precise procedural text. The correct mantras, the correct offerings, the correct fire — all three must be present. A hurried or incomplete pooja does not produce the same result as a full ritual performed with proper Sankalpa and complete mantras.
"The planets do not respond to fear or bribery. They respond to sincere invocation, correct procedure, and the righteousness of the person performing the ritual. Navgraha Pooja is a dialogue with cosmic forces — not a transaction."
